Oncology Massage Diploma

This blended-learning diploma combines comprehensive pre-course online study with three practical training days in Exeter.

You will explore the science of cancer, common medical treatments, side effects and contraindications before learning how to safely adapt massage techniques to support clients throughout diagnosis, active treatment, recovery and beyond.

By integrating theory with practical application, you will leave feeling confident in your ability to make informed treatment decisions and provide compassionate, individualised care.

Online Theory includes:

• Understanding cancer development, terminology, risk factors, types and stages.
• Cancer treatments including surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy.
• Medical devices such as PICC lines, ports and catheters.
• Symptoms and side effects associated with cancer and its treatment.
• Benefits and contraindications of massage.
• Safe treatment adaptations.
• Supporting clients through different phases of the cancer journey.
• Client consultation, communication and appropriate clinical decision-making.

In-Person Practical Training

• Integrating theory through case studies and guided discussion.
• Adapting massage techniques safely to individual needs.
• Working around medical devices, positioning considerations and tissue fragility.
• Adjusting depth and style of treatment appropriately.
• On the third day, gaining invaluable supervised experience working directly with individuals living with cancer.

Participants must hold:

• A minimum Level 3 Massage qualification.
• A minimum Level 3 Anatomy, Physiology and Pathology qualification.

This course is designed for qualified therapists wishing to safely include clients with cancer within their practice.

• Comprehensive online learning available on enrolment.
• The online component must be completed before attending the practical training.
• Three full days of face-to-face teaching and practical application.
• Case discussions, demonstrations and supervised hands-on practice throughout.

Learning takes place through a combination of online study, practical participation, case discussions and supervised application of techniques throughout the three-day programme.

Successful completion demonstrates your understanding of safe practice and treatment adaptation when working with clients affected by cancer.

On successful completion, you will receive the Oncology Massage Diploma, approved by Think Tree, equipping you with the knowledge and confidence to safely adapt massage treatments for clients living with or recovering from cancer.

I do not really want to specialise in end-of-life care. Is this course still suitable for me?

Absolutely. End-of-life care forms only one part of the training. Much of the course focuses on supporting people during treatment, recovery and long-term survivorship. The primary aim is to give you the knowledge and confidence to safely welcome clients with cancer into your practice, rather than feeling you have to turn them away because of uncertainty or lack of training.
