Manual Lymphatic Drainage Diploma

This blended-learning diploma combines online study, two practical teaching weekends and independent case study work to provide an in-depth introduction to Manual Lymphatic Drainage.

You will develop a detailed understanding of lymphatic anatomy and physiology before learning precise techniques for the face, neck, torso and limbs. Alongside practical skills, the course explores assessment, treatment planning, contraindications and adapting MLD to meet the needs of individual clients.

The programme has been carefully structured to allow you to consolidate your learning between the two practical weekends through supervised case study experience.

Looking Ahead – Post-Operative Manual Lymphatic Drainage (Coming in 2027)

We are currently developing a Post-Operative Manual Lymphatic Drainage course for therapists who wish to support clients following cosmetic and reconstructive surgery.

Available exclusively to graduates of our Manual Lymphatic Drainage Diploma, this advanced training will build on your existing skills and focus on the safe, informed and effective treatment of post-operative clients. As more surgeons recommend MLD to support recovery, reduce swelling and optimise healing, this specialist progression route will provide an exciting opportunity to expand your practice into this growing area.

The course includes:

• In-depth anatomy and physiology of the lymphatic system.
• Indications, contraindications and clinical applications.
• Manual Lymphatic Drainage techniques for the face, neck, torso and limbs.
• Protocols for oedema, general wellness and discussion of lymphoedema and when referral is appropriate.
• Client assessment and treatment planning.
• Adapting treatments for individual clients.
• Extensive hands-on practical training.
• Integration of theory through case studies and clinical reasoning.

Applicants should hold:

• A recognised minimum Level 3 Anatomy, Physiology and Pathology qualification, and
• A minimum Level 3 Massage qualification,

or

Be qualified in another suitable hands-on bodywork profession, such as Physiotherapy, Chiropractic, Bowen Therapy or Acupuncture, with substantial experience working with the whole body.

• Four practical training days delivered over two weekends.
• Comprehensive pre-course online learning available one month before the first practical weekend.
• Online learning must be completed before attending the course.
• Following Part One, students can begin their three case studies, each involving four treatments with the same client.
• The final practical weekend builds upon this experience, allowing you to integrate your learning and refine your skills.

The course combines theory, demonstrations, case discussions and extensive practical application throughout.

Assessment is based on successful completion of the online learning modules, participation in the practical training together with completion of the required case studies within 3 months of the final course date.

This structure allows students to gain valuable real-world experience before returning to consolidate and expand their learning.

Successful completion awards the Manual Lymphatic Drainage Diploma, providing comprehensive postgraduate training in Manual Lymphatic Drainage for appropriately qualified therapists and bodywork professionals.

The emphasis is on safe practice, sound clinical reasoning and tailoring treatments to individual clients.

Is Manual Lymphatic Drainage the same as the lymphatic techniques I learned in Swedish massage?

No. While many therapists are introduced to basic concepts during their initial training, Manual Lymphatic Drainage is a highly specialised modality with its own principles, techniques and clinical applications. This diploma explores the subject in far greater depth.

I have already completed a one-day MLD course. Is it worth doing this diploma?

In many cases, yes. This course has been designed to provide a much deeper understanding of both the theory and practical application of Manual Lymphatic Drainage, giving therapists the confidence to adapt treatments safely and appropriately. If you are unsure whether it is suitable for you, we would be happy to discuss your previous training and experience.

Will this training enable me to treat lymphoedema?

No. Management of lymphoedema is a specialist area requiring additional training. The topic is discussed during the course, including appropriate referral considerations, but comprehensive lymphoedema management is beyond the scope of this diploma.

Does this qualify me to treat clients with cancer?

No. While MLD may sometimes be appropriate for people affected by cancer, therapists should also hold appropriate specialist oncology training, such as our Oncology Massage Diploma, to ensure they are working safely and within the requirements of their professional insurance.

Will there be videos to help me remember the techniques after training?

Yes. Following the first practical weekend, you will have access to video demonstrations of the routine to support your home practice and help reinforce correct technique while completing your case studies.
