Acupressure for Bodyworkers

Acupressure for Bodyworkers

Discover Acupressure, Explore the Five Elements and Bring New Possibilities to Your Treatments

Acupressure offers bodywork therapists another way to explore touch, connection and the individual needs of the person on the treatment couch. Rooted in the principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), acupressure works with specific points traditionally understood in relation to the body’s meridian pathways and the movement of Qi.

Our Acupressure for Bodyworkers course has been created specifically for qualified massage and bodywork therapists who would like to explore these principles and learn how selected acupressure points can be incorporated naturally into the treatments they already offer.

Across two practical days with pre-course online learning, you will be introduced to the Five Elements – Water, Wood, Fire, Earth and Metal – and explore how this traditional framework considers connections between the individual, emotions, seasons and patterns of health and wellbeing.

You will learn how to accurately locate and work with a carefully selected range of useful acupressure points, including points traditionally used to support people experiencing common concerns such as headaches, jaw tension, sleep difficulties, anxiety, low energy, digestive issues and changes around perimenopause.

Most importantly, you will explore how to bring these points into your own way of working. Rather than learning a completely separate treatment routine, you will practise integrating acupressure into your own bodywork practice, giving you additional tools that can be adapted thoughtfully for individual clients.

Add Another Dimension to Your Bodywork

Acupressure doesn’t have to become a separate treatment that sits apart from everything you already do.

A thoughtfully chosen point can become part of a massage, fascial treatment or other bodywork session – offering another way to respond to the individual person in front of you.

Through practical exploration of acupressure and the Five Elements, this course gives you an introduction to a different tradition of understanding the body while helping you discover how its principles can sit alongside your existing skills.

Explore the points. Understand the principles. Then make them part of your own way of working.

Why you should train with us

At the School of Bodywork, we don’t believe postgraduate training should simply give you another routine to follow. We want you to understand what you are doing, explore different ways of working and then discover how new skills can become part of your own individual practice.

This course combines introductory Traditional Chinese Medicine theory with plenty of practical exploration. You will learn through movement, discussion, demonstration, case studies and hands-on practice, helping the theory become something you can actually apply within your treatments.

There is also an emphasis on your own experience as a therapist. Through the Five Elements and practices such as Makka Ho stretching, you will have opportunities to reflect on your own energy and wellbeing alongside considering the clients you work with.

Course overview

This two-day course with online learning introduces qualified therapists to the foundations of acupressure and explores practical ways to incorporate selected points into existing bodywork treatments.

You will learn how to locate points accurately, how much pressure to use, how long to work with a point and how to respond to feedback from the person receiving the treatment.

Alongside the practical work, you will explore the Five Element framework within Traditional Chinese Medicine and consider how this can inform your understanding of individual clients and treatment choices.

Case studies and paired practice will help you move from learning individual points to thinking about which points you might choose, why you might choose them and how they could be incorporated naturally into a treatment.

Course syllabus

Throughout the course you will explore:

  • Foundations and principles of acupressure.
  • An introduction to meridians, Qi and Traditional Chinese Medicine.
  • The Five Elements – Water, Wood, Fire, Earth and Metal.
  • How to locate acupressure points accurately using cun measurement.
  • Appropriate pressure, duration and sensitivity when working with points.
  • Benefits, considerations and contraindications for selected points.
  • A practical selection of useful acupressure points associated with each of the Five Elements.
  • Selecting points according to the individual client.
  • Using case studies to develop treatment choices and clinical thinking.
  • Integrating acupressure naturally into massage and other bodywork treatments.
  • TCM-informed lifestyle and self-care ideas that may complement your client aftercare.
  • Makka Ho stretches and embodied exploration of the meridian pathways.

The emphasis throughout is on practical application, giving you time to locate, experience and work with the points rather than simply learning them theoretically.

Entry requirements

This course is designed for qualified massage, bodywork therapists and reflexologists who would like to incorporate acupressure into their existing professional practice.

Students should hold an appropriate professional bodywork qualification together with a recognised Anatomy, Physiology & Pathology qualification.

You do not need any previous knowledge of acupressure or Traditional Chinese Medicine.

Course Format

This is a blended-learning course, combining pre-course online theory with two practical classroom days.

Your online learning will introduce you to key concepts within Traditional Chinese Medicine and the Five Elements before you attend.

During the practical days, the emphasis moves towards bringing that theory to life through:

  • Makka Ho stretching and embodied learning.
  • Tutor demonstrations.
  • Locating and practising acupressure points.
  • Paired practical work.
  • Case studies and discussion.
  • Exploring Five Element patterns.
  • Integrating points into your existing bodywork practice.

You will both give and receive acupressure during the course, allowing you to experience the points from the perspective of both therapist and client.

Assessments

Learning will be developed and assessed throughout the course through practical work, case studies, discussion and your ability to safely locate and apply the acupressure points taught. There is no formal assessment.

Qualification & Accreditation

This course is CPD Approved by ThinkTree.

FAQs

Do I need any previous knowledge of acupressure or Traditional Chinese Medicine?

No. The course will introduce the foundational concepts you need, with pre-course online learning helping you become familiar with the Five Elements and relevant TCM principles before the practical training begins.

Will I learn a complete acupressure treatment?

Rather than teaching you another fixed routine, you will learn a carefully selected range of acupressure points and explore how and when you might integrate them into the treatments you already offer.

Is this only suitable for massage therapists?

The course is intended for qualified massage, bodywork and reflexology practitioners. The practical work can potentially complement different forms of hands-on therapy, rather than being limited to one particular style of massage.

Can I use these techniques within my existing massage treatments?

That is one of the main aims of the course.

You will practise bringing individual acupressure points into your existing bodywork so that they can become part of a treatment rather than something you have to offer separately.

As with any additional professional training, therapists should ensure that the techniques they use are appropriate to their existing qualification, scope of practice and insurance.

Tutor / Tutors

Zoe Rosenthall

Zoe brings her knowledge and experience of acupressure and Traditional Chinese Medicine, through her Shiatsu practice, into a practical course specifically designed for therapists who already have their own established bodywork skills.

Her approach encourages students not simply to memorise a list of points, but to develop sensitivity in how they work with them and understand the wider Five Element principles that sit behind the practice.

Throughout the course, Zoe encourages students to explore the material both professionally and personally – considering the needs of their clients while also developing greater awareness of their own patterns, energy and wellbeing.
